Back in 2006 , Rachel and I had two tyke and were live in a little letting planetary house we could scarce afford . i was scramble as a freelancer , and trying to stay near my family in Ft . Lauderdale . For a while , we kept our heads above water with my audio redaction skills , but then one eve I got a earpiece call . My main guest was no longer financially able to stay undirected . This meant that we were n’t going to be able to stay afloat either – at least not in Ft . Lauderdale ! The trapping boom had push back prices through the roof and there were rumblings of financial ruin on the skyline .

To stay financially solvent , we move to Central Florida and rent a little dawdler in a park skirt by orange groves . There I worked hard to grow food for thought in the frightful sand – every bit of food we arise helped our budget , so gardening was authoritative ! After more financial issues attain us – and after we had another sister – we moved up to Tennessee where I had some freelance connections . I took odd Job , ranging from paint houses to work in a storage warehouse . We get some audio editing jobs , but they were n’t enough . For a while , I even tutored ESL students at a local college .

In Tennessee , I learned more about horticulture , this time in geographical zone 6/7 . We get all we could , composted all we could to feed our gardens , and we lived on next to nothing . We had a wall unit keeping one elbow room of our family cool when it was over 100 degree outdoors , since we could n’t afford to cool the total house , as tiny as it was . We had a unmarried elevator car and the budget was tight .

Now I realize how much those day teach us – and how they shaped my animation as a nurseryman . We did n’t grow for play , though we enjoyed growing . We farm because it helped us stay fed . white potato , tomatoes , healthy putting green , piles of compost … this was our life . And it still is .

Those experience led me to write the bookGrow or Die : The Good Guide to Survival Gardening – and the events of 2020 cement what I save in that book – and also turned it into a bestseller on Amazon .

Life is complex and flimsy , so our food gardening should be simple and antifragile .
