Louisiana nurseries are present several challenge following Hurricane Laura , including damage structures , lost production metre and power outage .

The storm ’s impression are especially noticeable at the numerous nurseries in and around the Forest Hill and Glenmora communities in rural southwesterly Rapides Parish .

“ It was a very hard hit for our industry , as it go through the substance of Louisiana ’s greenhouse industry , ” said Jeb Fields , LSU AgCenter commercial horticulture specializer .

A weather place at the AgCenter Dean Lee Research and Extension Center near Alexandria record wind speed as high as 79.1 mph during the hurricane . Those strong winds knocked down tree and destroy shade and poly business firm at some central Louisiana baby’s room , Fields sound out .

Some wellspring and other equipment were damaged when the electricity went out , said Michael Polozola , a horticulture agentive role for the AgCenter Central Region .

nursery have had to pass several twenty-four hour period using generators to power their lacrimation systems . Most Forest Hill nursery now have electricity , Polozola say , but many others are still relying on author because they ’re in outlying areas where it could take longer for inspection and repair to be restore .

As for crop departure , “ most woody landscape painting plant should not be impacted greatly , ” Polozola order . He added , however , that one Forest Hill greenhouse ’s poinsettia harvest may be affected .

“ After visiting with several nurseries , the consensus is that the independent deprivation is time , ” Polozola say . “ I would say on ordinary , about two to three hebdomad of metre have and will be monopolized for preparation and convalescence . ”

Before the hurricane hit , workers removed charge plate sheeting from greenhouse to preclude winds from ripping it off , Polozola said . They ’re now have to substitute the plastic and reposition flora that were blown over .

These clip - consuming tasks descend as nursery are busy potting plants for drop sales .

“ It is arduous to attach a dollar value to that fall back sentence since it depart by the scale of the nursery , ” Polozola said . “ But I would say it is anywhere from $ 10,000 to $ 100,000 , depending on the size of it and who you postulate . ”

baby’s room in the Florida Parishes — Louisiana ’s other major nursery production region — fared better . Fields said there is “ not much equipment casualty at all . ”

Some Florida Parishes nurseries have sent generator to their opposite number in Forest Hill , and more help was expected to go far from Mississippi and Alabama , according to the Louisiana Nursery and Landscape Association .

Nurseries in southwestward Louisiana have “ a right mo of damage , ” Fields said , but the full extent is not yet know .
