For many years I wanted to find out about baseless foods and mushroom hunt but I did n’t know anyone else in Alabama with an interest in foraging . Then I fulfil my love , a military personnel from the Pacific Northwest that had relocated far from his aboriginal soggy habitat to the deep south . I never even knew what a morel was until hear his stories of picking Washington wildfire morel .   After   stumbling upon   landscape painting morel a few geezerhood ago in Birmingham , then learning that these peach actually do grow in Alabama ’s woods ,   we originate trace for them . And now , every Spring , when the elm leaf are the size of a mouse ear , we make it a point to chitchat our local timberland .

When I first taste those landscape morels , I acquire a bit haunted with finding them in reality growing wild . We hike many days and covered multitudinous miles of trail before discovering our first morel in the woods . Well , it was n’t precisely “ in the woods ” , it was a solitary blond locate in a duck soup space , directly off a well - traveled lead . But , after finding that first one , we thoroughly covered the area and found plenty more growing in a stretch of recently cleared privet . The next week were spent picking juicy blondeMorchellaonthe surrounding trail .

Several years have give-up the ghost since we found that first one . When we hit the lead now , we   are hike with   two kid and a dog . Our foraging adventures are considered a achiever if we manage to come out of the woods with even a fistful of fungus . Realistically , my foraging goal is ordinarily to   discover enough mushrooms to flavour a cream sauce for a pasta supper .   We are always happy to be in the Sir Henry Joseph Wood   no matter what , but we are always dreaming of   the next big morel score .

I see the firstmorels of the seasonthis year on February 27th .   A few day later I get back out to the area by myself hope to perchance find just a few more . I hike up the track for a bit and then ramble off through a coppice hoping to find a hidden trove of fungal treasure . tramp through the bramble was pointless , as usual . When I had lastly given up and was channelize out of the woods , I caught a glimpse of a few grey cones poke up through the leaf litter … .. and then a few more…….and then a few more . I stood on the lead with my mouth gapped unfastened , probably drooling on myself a bit . I was looking at the most beautiful patch of morels I had ever seen . They were in plain view about 20 foundation from the trail head . I had walk properly preceding   them double that day !

After taking a ton of pictures and really appreciating the beauty of my discovery , I squat down at the edge of the small patch to set forth harvest . I had gathered up a few morels ,   but   then had to stop .   I   could not enjoy picking that most magnificent patch   all alone . I had to expect to share the present moment with my forage / life partner .   I texted him picture and go home with plans of get along back the next daytime to pick them together . But I heard back almost at once . It is amazing how quickly he was able to break away   from oeuvre and get out to the Grant Wood ! We manoeuver back that same good afternoon in a downpour . My Northwestern homo looked decent at home pluck those morel in the Alabama rainwater .

pluck this perfect patch of morel was my favourite forage experience   yet .   We harvest 2 & 1/2 pounds in a matter of minutes . This was not the first time we had   pick that many morels in a day , but it is the first time we picked   that many in one place .   They were   all arise together in an area smaller than our livelihood room . We may hunt Morels every   Spring for the relief of our lives , and never   have a more stark foraging experience .
