It is that time of twelvemonth again already ! Today we keep the true arrival of summer with the solstice – the long day and short night of the intact year . Not that summer weather has n’t already been here for some time – it is hot here in Maryland !
Summertime and the life ai n’t so easy for this gardener ; “ move gardener ” is an oxymoron . We ’ve had lots of pelting and the dang widow’s weeds are grow bigger than the vegetables . After planting the industrial plant and sowing the seed , I mulched the beds with wheat straw . Then I hold up away for two weeks and when I returned the straw seminal fluid had sprouted and ingest hold and had surpassed the size of the babe kale and transplants . So I had to get down and root out that sens and grow every bit of mulch over to save the garden . It is look okay now , though there are a number of beds that need to be weeded before they are brim over .

I just returned from most a week in Madison , Wisconsin , where I give ear the Herb Society of America ’s yearly conference , which is always smashing merriment and educational of course . We visited the University of Madison Arbortetum , Olbrich Botanical Gardens and Allen Centennial Garden – all very different from one another – and all of them not to be missed if you are in the area . Our hotel was right on the master Capitol lame in town , with light-green grassy areas and bright flowers in containers , and one of the biggest farmers ’ markets that I have ever seen . This is a college town – a very blank , food- , people- and pet - friendly city with endearing greenspaces and plantings . Madison is located on an isthmus between two lakes , easy within walking distance and we walked to Monona Terrace a number of times – it has native plant in raised bed garden , a dandy persuasion of Lake Monona and must - see lights at nighttime .
Since we had league all day Saturday , a number of us got up too soon to visit the acclaimed farmers ’ market which opened at 6:15 am ! It was well worth arising betimes to see with the glad vendors and see the mouthwatering array of garden bountifulness usable in Wisconsin . Herbs , veggies , fruits , bollock , honeys and jamming , baked good , cheeseflower , plant and more were beautifully display and we ooh and aah our way around the securities industry , regress to the hotel laden with all variety of goodies , as well as plants , even though we were fly back to our homes . I can attest that nurseryman are good at load down plant and foodstuffs in their suitcases .
Enjoy the photos of the Madison Fannie Farmer ’ market here along with a few place in the city – be sure to visit your local Fannie Farmer ’ market and support our James Leonard Farmer . Celebrate the summer solstice with local , seasonal bounteousness – perhaps a cinch or dining al fresco – after a moment of weeding !
