There were some sensational garden at Chelsea this year but my personal Best in Show award goes toThe Boodles Travel Garden – Around the World in 16 Days , plan by Tom Hoblyn . Why ? Because very few Chelsea gardens make me want to pull up my own garden and get again . Not only that , but The Beau and I consort nem con that this was our favourite design and that ’s something to celebrate .

Tom Hoblyn is no unknown to Chelsea . He ’s one of those garden designers who just gets on with it , quietly accruing palm as he live on . With that tranquility , and considerable experience , come the confidence to present gardens that resist flashiness but still deliver in spades .

The other view of Tom ’s intention that come across strongly with me was the wiggly path running alongside a shallow rivulet . If you read my late situation aboutTrengwainton in Cornwallyou may recall that my preferred feature of that garden is the flow that emerges from forest to run alongside a pushchair drive for a short prison term – it ’s a wonderfully picturesque setting brilliantly formulate to amuse and entertain anyone arriving at the house . That same combination of path , cascade water supply and verdant planting was portray here , albeit in a more succinct and modern-day course . The demarcation between wan , suave path and dour , burble water was already beautiful , but then lush green planting plunges down to meet it . ( The grain of the current layer reminded me of an ammonoid , although looking at it again there ’s an uncanny resemblance to the conveyor belt at a luggage reclaim . Let ’s move swiftly past that ! )

All around the garden there were references to different refinement and that ’s where the travel element amount in . In 1962 , Anthony Wainwright , male parent of the current Boodles chairman , travel around the earthly concern in just 16 days . He call in a amount of 10 city on the route , break off to buy stone . It was a time when air travelling was circumscribed , infrequent and expensive – even today this would be quite a difficult journey to make . Perhaps the most obvious travel references lay in the alternative of planting , withCyathea cooperiifrom India , Cornus kousafrom East Asia , hostas from Japan , pseudopanax from New Zealand andAcerdavidii from China . The back nook of the garden had a particularly Oriental feeling with its doodly-squat , blacken furniture and heavy frame surrounding a picket , slat room access .

Tom used several of the oldest conjuration in the book for take the place appear larger than it was : obscuring the end of the garden to provide a sense that something lies beyond , sinuous lines to cark the heart from rushing straight to the death and a itinerary that becomes narrower as it recedes into the distance , creating false perspective . These are all simple gimmick we can engage in our garden to increase the signified of blank space .

Slight mouding of the earth in plant areas helped to give the garden depth and the planting tiptop . This subtle landscape gardening was accentuated by cautiously select pieces of gnarled and brave out timbre , very much in the Nipponese vogue . Although the wall surrounding the garden were dark , the water system and burnished , reflective itinerary shake off ample ignitor up into the planting .

The photograph above exhibit how much can be achieve with green foliage alone ; from the crisp , feathery frond of autumn fern , Dryopteris erythrosora , to the brooding , elongated blades ofHosta‘Devon Green ’ . dart flowers act as punctuation points , rather than the main narrative , which is good path to design a garden . Perhaps a few more evergreens could have been included to carry the sake through to winter , although beneath that mantle of mind - you - own - business sector could have been a dormant carpet of snowdrops and aconite . Most of the plants featured would be well-chosen growing in partial or majority shade , offer promise and breathing in to anyone with an enclosed or north - facing garden that understand little of the sun .

5 thing I loved about Tom ’s garden – A sentiency that the garden might retain in either direction , with the electric potential for the stream to bear on its journey beyond this garden ’s limit , perhaps into a wilder region or a pool . – The wiggly route snaking through the garden make unlike vistas and little peninsula for set . – The ammonite - like stream bed , channelling coolheaded , rippling water past lush planting . suppose the fun that kid could have playing Pooh sticks here ( supervise , of course ) . – Use of foliage plant , providing a farsighted period of sake and the unadulterated transparency for carefully chosen efflorescence plant . – Dramatic render walls imprinted with fern fronds .

Tom ’s garden pull in him another gold medal , which will be quietly stashed away until the next fourth dimension . I hope that next time comes soon . For more of Tom ’s work , you’re able to visit his web site atthomashoblyn.com . cover scroll down for a full plant life list . TFG .
