— Guy Clark , Homegrown Tomatoes ( mind on YouTube)Summertime and the livin ’ is easy … and it is just about the summit of our summer grow time of year … just finished the first hebdomad of August .   veg like tomatoes , squash , eggplant , cucumbers and noggin have nearly reached their peak , although the capsicum pepper plant have a little more time to maturity . We have another good calendar month of these wonderful seasonal veggie and then they ’ll start up slowing down production once the cool dark temperature set in . Already the night are cooling down just a spot - you may sense it in the melodic phrase - better sleeping weather - that is for sure .

Here in my Maryland zone 7 garden , it seems downright hobo camp - like . We ’ve had rain so that plant leaf as well as locoweed are verdant green . The grass holds dew until tardy morning and is wet when the sunshine begins to set and it feel like a voiced , plush moist carpet to my unfinished feet . It is home to hoppy toad , slithering snakes and the occasional turtle - I can tell by how the grass move . Unfortunately the humidity has cause the mosquitoes to come in out and I ca n’t sit alfresco in the even without their pesky buzzing and biting ; have to slather on my homemade insect - repellent oil .

The butterflies dance all day on the herb flowers of bee balm , Echinacea , thyme and about - spent lavender flower as well as phlox , marigolds , genus Agastache and vegetable flowers . Bees overnight in the curcurbit flush . The other morning I was up very betimes and go out to the garden and the butterfly stroke and bees were n’t up yet , which somehow tickled me . I spot many of the latter ( imagining them to be passably drunk on nectar ) sleeping in the flowers they chose to pollinate and overnight in .

Well I sort of go off the matter of this blog … and that istomatoes . Green , yellow , crimson or orange – cherry tree , pear , round or enceinte meaty one – I love them all . I am sort of a tomato junkie this time of year . I can eat them at least three times a twenty-four hour period - and one of those times - is almost always on atomato sandwich . I consider myself anartisteat them and you could read about ithere .

I love them just sliced with saltiness and peppercorn ; I adore them with basil ; mozzarella and olive vegetable oil makes the perfect Caprese salad . They are superb with cucumbers and feta in asummer Greek salad . Any manner you slit them is all right with me . Fresh , sauteed , roasted , or grill , I make them into soup , salads , casserole , pizzas , pastas , pies and more . I also pick them green to make fried green tomatoes , dipped in egg and cornmeal with seasonings for an occasional summertime treat . Besides eating them solo , I combine them with eggplant , Greek - fashion or incaponataItalian - elan ; with squash in the Frenchratatouille ; with Zea mays in Mexicancalabacitasand Southern - style saute in butter or made into succotash ; stewed with green beans or Hibiscus esculentus , Lebanese or Turkish - style ; or combined with a medley of summertime veggie in mytagineto make a fragrant summer lather . One of my master summertime staples ishomemade garden salsa . Well here is a new recipe for you to try , featuring love apple - as well as garden cucumbers , peppers , onions and garlic - try this easy and tastygarden gazpacho .

A final banknote , even though it is hot , get out in the kitchen and pop out preserving your summertime - ripe tomato plant so that you could savor them in the inhuman weather month . It is so worth the sweat . Can them whole , make them into sauce or salsa , cetchup and chutney , make them into juice - just do it now - you’ll be beaming you did !
