Growing Community: Body and Soul
Lenny West is only 22 , but already knows what he want to do the rest of his lifespan . An Army Veteran , he found his anchor and passionate missionary post in cater fresh vegetables and tasty microgreens to food desert neighbors in the Killeen / Temple area . To grow his knowledge , he volunteered at community of interests garden . Now a 2024 grad of theBell County Master Gardenerprogram , we met up with him at his Killeen rental house in May . “My goal mostly is to be able to bring it to the youth because if you ’re capable to start young and have good cope skills , you ’re able to connect the mind , the dead body and the soul at a new age . Then you are capable to equip yourself to subsist a good , healthy life story , ” he severalise us . “You just implant that seed in them and hope they water it , and just know that you were there to be a part of that . ”To expand his visual sensation , he team up with fellow community - orient title-holder , Deonta Davis . A elated , industrious and focused duo , they plan to transform a vacant lot — owned by Deonta ’s family in Temple — into a food forest wellness harbor , all over with native plants for pollinator . Back in Killeen , Lenny severalise us that he started gardening in an apartment . To raise larger plant , he moved to a rental theatre , growing in 5 - gallon containers , mostly donated from nurseries or repurposed from local delis for a few dollars . ( control your food shop for pickle cask , etc . ) He even picks up recycle mushroom cloud blocks from local mushroom cloud cultivator . He encourages young gardener , “ You do n’t have to have a gross ton of money , and you do n’t have to have a ton of infinite . ”Oh yeah , I ’ve been there and I reckon you have , too ! Lenny vivify so many precious memories of that first passalong , that first clip that I successfully produce up thanks to the sodium carbonate bottleful greenhouse !
