Out with the lawn, in with the gardens
Today we ’re in Cincinnati , Ohio , visiting with Erin Houlihan .
This garden has developed over 34 year in a very lowly urban quite a little . It has evolved from challenge , and it is very singular . I have no grass and tend it all organically .
The backyard has been challenged by the with child pin oaks in back , which provide more shadiness each twelvemonth , and a silvery maple(Acersaccharinum , Zones 3–9 ) Tennessean from my childhood home . The maple is now 32 years honest-to-goodness , and its shallow roots make it very inhospitable to most plants .

The front and side yards had lawn that was mostly weeds . newfangled stone walks have now replaced it . The side grand had largewhite pinesthat declined , and they were removed last year . I start a meadow there this class , since I am running out of sun in the back . I put in wads ofnativesand some anchor from the back that postulate sun . I will proceed to work on the meadow .
Through the age , I have lose many plant life by drain , nature , and ecumenical encyclopedism experience .
A stone walkway winds through the garden , lead you on to research .

As the pin oaks ( Quercuspalustris , Zones 4–9 ) grow , they make this garden increasingly shade . instruct to change the plantings to adjust to thelight levelsis something most nurseryman have to deal with in a maturing garden .
Another stone path go through a spot ofshade , with views of a cheery part of the garden forwards .
A beautiful lilac ( looks likeSyringapubescens‘Miss Kim ’ , Zones 4–8 , or a like cultivar ) trained as a criterion makes a dramatic feature of speech .

No one misses the scraggy frontlawnif this is what it has been replaced with !
earth cut across likecreeping Jenny(Lysimachianummularia‘Aurea ’ , Zones 3–9 ) will fill in the space around the rock pavers in thefront garden .
A statue holding a container of orange pansies ( Viola×wittrockiana , annual ) adds a pop of color .

I love garden paths like this , with a half - obscured view , hinting at what you will find ahead .
Continue down that route , and you find the pond , complete with blooming water lily ( Nymphaeasp . ) and talllotus(Nelumbonucifera , Zones 4–9 ) leaves .
