A small city garden packed with beauty
Cherry Ong is a frequent contributor to our“GPOD on the Road”series . But she not only loves visiting beautiful garden . She has a tremendous garden blank space of her own at her menage in Richmond , British Columbia , and today she ’s sharing some summer views from that distance .
It ’s been hotter than common , and the spring was colder than common , but that ’s how it extend with gardening .
Hakonechloamacra(Zones 5–9 ) is one of my favoriteornamental grasses . ‘ All - amber ’ in this seam along the west molding is quite the show - stopper , as it reset the tad and has amazingtexture . It ’s a deadening grower but by all odds deserving the wait . It ’s also an excellentcontainer works .

I wish jam the area outside the back door with seasonal container . Senecio candicans‘Angel Wings ’ ( zone 8–11 or as an yearly ) is an all - season front-runner for container . Garden Christ Within are courtesy of my hubby !
I ’ve not had much luck growingColocasiagiven our historically nerveless summers , but this year I knuckle under to my beloved for them . I also love cookies - and - emollient / disgraceful - and - white plant combinations , and I whip some up every season where I can . The ingredients of this container areColocasia esculenta‘Coffee Cups ’ ( Zones 7–11 or as an annual),Angelonia(Zones 9–11 or as an annual),Euphorbia‘Starblast Soft Pink ’ ( annual),Plectranthusscutellarioides‘Color Blaze Newly Noir ’ ( Zones 9–11 or as an annual),Ipomoea‘Sweet Caroline Bewitched After Midnight ’ ( Zones 10–11 or as an annual ) andDichondra‘Silver Falls ’ ( zone 8–11 or as an one-year ) .
Who does n’t love a stadium of hens and chicks ? This one isSempervivum‘Bee Golden ’ ( zone 5–8 ) and is from a local breeder / nursery .

I so have it away my false bois birdcage ! Those who have seen photos of my younger garden might remember a garden clock in this location . When the clock break and could n’t be repair , I think it was an opportunity for an upgrade , so I saved up for this beauty from a local specialty glasshouse ! It echoes the dreamy foliage of theAcerpalmatum‘Ukigumo ’ ( geographical zone 5–9 ) .
How about pink hotshot to celebrate the summertime ? MeetCardiandra alternifolia(Zones 5–9 ) . I ’ve had this shrub growing in a container for many years now .
In the Dame Rebecca West bottom , Hydrangea paniculata‘Bobo ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) is lay on a summertime show . It ’s not as showy as it can be , likely because it needs more Lord’s Day . Hopefully the late pruning of theAcer palmatum‘Moonfire ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) will be enough of a modification for next class ’s bloom . bluff foliagestars in this pic areArisaemaringens(Zones 6–9),Helleborushybridus‘Onyx Odyssey ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) andBergeniaciliata‘Dumbo ’ ( zone 5–8 ) .

In the east bed , another hydrangea is put on a show . Hydrangea paniculata‘Limelight ’ needs no entry , though I guess this one is leggy due to the tad rove by the neighboringAcer palmatum‘Sangokaku ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) I had to hold back until after June 30 before clip any of myJapanese maples , so that was a limit factor . Likewise , the summertime container withCanna‘Durban ’ ( Zones 7–9 or as a bid bulb ) has been touch by the same situation . I do hope we have enough of a summer leave for the container to reach its full potential . fingerbreadth crossed !
The last exposure shew one of my experimentalhanging basketsthis year . It ’s my first time to growRhodochiton(Zones 9–11 or as an annual ) , and I ’ve been training it to grow up the attend basket and onto the Nipponese maple . I ’m hoping that I ’ll have a pretty garland of trump flowers hang from the branches by the end of summertime . Wish me hazard !
Last thoughts : I long for garden rooms much like those I see in the pages ofFine Gardeningmagazine . My city garden is diminutive and does n’t reserve for such , so if any of you have estimation on how to achieve this in asmall - space garden , I would love to hear about it .
