A small cottage garden
My garden is a little village garden , 600 square meters , with an old stone wall circling two side of it . My husband Hervé and I buy the house in 1995 , and I have been capable since then to exercise my love of perennial . I am overfond of golden andvariegated foliageto relieve the tedium of green , and I lovebright colors . We have anOpen Garden schemein France too , and I open my garden to the populace every year in June .
Here are ten garden vignettes .
This is the front garden , which is very lilliputian . There used to be crushed rock pits in a nearby village , and most house in Saint Julien apply gravel as a meanspirited forgarden track . The roses are ‘ pinkish Grootendorst ’ , corrupt in Scotland in 1998 , ‘ Marjorie Fair ’ , and ‘ Robin Hood ’ .

The asterisk of the garden is the centerpieceCotinus‘Grace ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) , one of my threesmoke treeswhich I bought for the sake of their terrific coloration , ‘ Grace ’ turns scarlet in the fall . I love every chance of ways out of green .
The chief path with its antique Edward Durell Stone slabs , the rosaceous trees are ‘ Ballerina ’ , a fabulous moschata rose that repeats flowering until very late in season , ‘ Evangeline ’ on the archway , and ‘ Sibelius ’ in the distance . I have installed sixarborsin the garden to reverberate my belovedEnglish gardens .
My garden shed was spell from England , the rose tree is ‘ Sibelius ’ , another fabulous moschata rose with a very unusual abstruse purple hue . The golden moment isCotinus‘Golden Spirit ’ , which turns pink in October .

I also have a tiny version of Marie - Antoinette ’s veg garden , where I uprise fun plant likeMertensia , whose leave taste of huitre , andPaederialanuginosa , which tastes of camembert . The heyday arelysimachia(Lysimachiapunctata , Zones 4–8 ) , one of my favorite perennials , which has a everlasting shape and is long - lasting and reliable .
The “ hot bottom ” with a choice ofheat - loving perennial , the heat being provided by the rumination of the sun on the former stone rampart . Salvia‘Serenade ’ ( Zones 3–9),Campanulapersicifolia(Zones 3–7 ) , ‘ Chevy Chase ’ fabulous pink wine tree , and perfumed - smelling whitecarnations , which we call “ granny ’s carnations ” because they used to raise in every village garden in Burgundy .
One of my pet plant combo , with tallPhalarisechoing slenderDigitalis‘Gerber Herold ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) .

Variegated pallida irises(Iris pallida‘Variegata ’ , Zones 4–9 ) are often sold as pond plants , but they also like dry gravelly spots .
A rareDictamnus albus(gas plant , Zones 3–8 ) thrives in the reflection of the sun on the oldgarden wall .
My favorite works combination in ashady areaof the garden , from get out to right : Hydrangea‘Invicibelle’(Hydrangea arborescens‘Invicibelle ’ , Zones 3–8 ) , which is the pinkish version of universal ‘ Annabelle’,Leucosceptrum‘Golden Angel ’ , aka Nipponese bush pile ( Zones 5–8),Boehmeria platanifolia(Zones 5–8),Lysimachia‘Firecracker ’ ( Zones 3–8),Persicariaamplicaulis(Zones 4–9 ) , and spectacularRodgersiaaesculifolia(Zones 4–7 ) .
