Small - outer space horticulture can present daunting challenge for landscape intriguer , particularly when the site can only be get at by a minute flight of step and is surrounded by grandiloquent buildings . This graceful terrace garden in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan is just shy of 500 square feet yet capitalise on every square inch of space . Thanks to the transformational skills of interior decorator Jeffrey Erb ofJeffrey Erb Landscape Design , New York , the rooftop garden has become a welcome retirement from the ado and hustle of metropolis life .
Before , this rooftop terrace in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan was an unuseable space with molder wood decking . Now the 500 - square - invertebrate foot retirement houses a modern field for entertaining within a classic framework of evergreen shrub and horizontal privacy fence . Photo by : Jeffrey Erb .
The bench is situated contiguous to the passe-partout sleeping accommodation of the possessor ’s flat and serves as an extension of the interior sustenance space . " One of the prompt goals we had for the space was to make it palpate more private . Large post across the street attend straight off onto this terrace . We used a compounding of slick horizontal fence as well as grandiloquent evergreen plant to make the space more secluded without blocking out light , " suppose Erb .

The fencing , evergreen hedging , and a retractable awning create a multifuntional outdoor way forgetful to the loom buildings around it . An outside idiot box and fireplace enclosed in custom - built cabinetwork anchor the chief seating area , while a separate zone was created for open-air dining . The entire terrace is grace by potted plant and shrubbery carefully selected to maximize seasonal interest and fall color .

“ The evergreen plant areThuja occidentalis‘Smaragd ’ ( emerald green arborvitae ) , which provide a punch of immature color year - rotund , ” says Erb . “ At the base of thearborvitae , we mix in perennial with different bloom times so there is always an spare elan of colour . The deciduous trees - three in a row in front of the horizontal slat fence — areCornusxrutdan‘Celestial ’ ( heavenly dogwood tree ) and were add together to create some rhythm method in the space . They feature beautiful white spring flowers and also have a gorgeous cryptic burgundy - reddened colour in the fall . I think this cultivar of dogwood tree does particularly well in containers , and the fall color is one of the best I ’ve seen for this genus . ”

Even though the terrace is relatively exposed , it does n’t get much sunlight since the Manhattan skyline is always change . " Because of several building to the Dixie , the light shape are spay . We had to be careful with our plant selection and check that that the industrial plant could hold up to part tint condition , " Erb explicate .
The works palette is fix in this small place , so the species were cautiously selected to maximize seasonal interest . Heuchera americana‘Palace Purple ’ fills the planters all season and last until the first hard frost . Nepeta‘Walker ’s Low ’ is another favorite perennial that was used because its billowy purple blooms will emerge several times in one time of year , as long as they are reduce back to rush raw growth . exposure by : Jeffrey Erb .
This terrace makeover was complete as part of a major renovation to the apartment interior . A key component of the projection was to substitute the exist rotting wood deck venire with ardor - resistant aluminum decking , in compliance with local fire computer code . “ All element of the pack of cards are constructed to link up into the frame so they are not penetrating any part of the construction . This is a specific matter we do in rooftop garden . To prevent the decking from looking too modern , we chose a pulverization - coat brown finish that provoke a look of woodwind instrument but without the sustainment , ” say Erb .

Site access presented a major challenge , since the chief entryway to the terrace was through a very minute staircase on the interior of the flat . “ Every constituent had to be measured carefully before bring it to the jobsite . Even the art object of decking had to be issue to specific lengths before they were brought to the space , ” says Erb .
It was also unmanageable to convey to the other contractor on the site that plants can be damage by expression debris . " It is a constant process of reminding contractile organ that cut off roofing tile and concrete creates dust , which can be harmful to flora if they get cake . We have to remind them that dump bucketful of water from cleaning into the soil of our planters is also harmful . It sounds silly , but these things go on often , " say Erb .

The outside fireplace , fromEcoSmart Fire , burns bioethanol fuel , a renewable energy source made from fermenting sugars from plant by - products . “ It is clean - combustion and does n’t produce ashes or soot . This special model produce a contain heating and only directs it outwards towards the front of the fireplace . It has the look and feel of a open fireplace but is really like a large wax light in a very attractive and stylish housing , ” tell Erb .
Prior to set up his own landscape painting design business , Erb served as the design squad coach at a New York - based design firm , where he refined his skills in rooftop garden design and facility . He is not unaccustomed to challenges such as this one , which involve him to juxtapose modern elements within a classical framework . “ A space like this is so rare to have , and it had to be the right balance of aesthetically pleasing yet very functional . We really capitalise on making this quad operational , ” he says .
